Focused on Success: Learning at Her Own Pace and Finding Success Through Photography
For many students, balancing schoolwork with personal interests can be a challenge. For Kylie M., a seventh-grade student from Albany, California, attending California Virtual Academy (蓝莓视频) provided her the opportunity to explore her interest in photography. Recently, Kylie earned first place in the K12 Photography Competition with her photo, Snail on a Leaf After a Rainy Day, which captured a quiet moment in nature.
Kylie鈥檚 photo stood out among more than 12,000 entries nationwide, demonstrating her ability to create a compelling image.
Finding a Better Fit with Virtual Learning
Kylie鈥檚 journey to 蓝莓视频 began two years ago when she and her family decided traditional public school wasn鈥檛 the right fit. After struggling with bullying and finding the pace of in-person classrooms challenging, she switched to online learning.
鈥淭radition school wasn鈥檛 working for me,鈥 Kylie shared. 鈥溊遁悠 lets me learn at my own pace, which has made a big difference.鈥
Enrolling at 蓝莓视频 has given Kylie the ability to balance her schoolwork with hobbies like photography, rollerblading and robotics.

Capturing a Winning Photo
Kylie鈥檚 winning photo came about during a backyard moment with her sister. 鈥淲e were outside after it rained and saw a snail on a leaf,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 thought it was a really peaceful scene, so I took a picture of it.鈥
Using her mother鈥檚 iPhone, Kylie captured the image that earned her first place in her grade level and a $1,000 prize. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 expect to win, but it feels great to have my work recognized,鈥 she said.
How 蓝莓视频 Supports Student Success
Kylie credits 蓝莓视频鈥檚 learning model, which gives her the freedom to manage her schedule and focus on her needs. Her mother, Otoe, shared how the school has positively impacted their family.
鈥淜ylie has really benefited from being able to set her own schedule and focus on what鈥檚 important to her,鈥 Otoe said. 鈥淭he teachers are very supportive, and the school gives her time to explore her interests.鈥
Kylie also participates in 蓝莓视频鈥檚 rollerblading and robotics clubs, which have helped her make friends and build new skills. 鈥淚鈥檝e made a few close friends through the rollerblading club,鈥 Kylie said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a nice way to connect with others outside of classes.鈥
Looking Ahead
While Kylie isn鈥檛 sure what she wants to do in the future, she continues to enjoy photography and other activities. 鈥淚 like taking photos of animals and nature,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 something I鈥檇 like to keep doing.鈥
Kylie appreciates how virtual learning provides her and her classmates with the tools to succeed academically while exploring their interests. Kylie鈥檚 story encourages others to find new opportunities and explore what makes them happy.
